This strange and brilliant book recounts Jenny Diski's journey to Antarctica last year, intercut with another journey into her own heart and soul.a book of dazzling variety, which weaves disquisitions on indolence, truth, inconsistency, ambiguousness, the elephant seal, Shackleton, boredom and over and over Jenny Diski beschreef in haar reisboeken Schaatsen naar Antarctica en Vreemdeling in een trein hoe ze verre reizen maakte om zich in zichzelf en haar verleden te verdiepen. Uiteindelijk bleek ze echter nergens zo gelukkig te zijn als thuis, waar ze door niemand werd gestoord. Maar haar situatie veranderde toen de Dichter in haar leven kwam. Jenny Diski is the author of eight novels and two memoirs: SKATING TO ANTARCTICA and STRANGER ON A TRAIN. She lives in Cambridge. Reviews. This is the singular tome which she has written that appealed to me the most, a travelogue about her journey to Antarctica. - Independent on Sunday 'Jenny Diski's Skating to Antarctica, part traveller's tale, part autobiography, tells the story of a trip to Antarctica, interwoven with reminiscences of her dysfunctional family and daughter's quest to find what became of Diski's own long-lost mother. Skating To Antarctica goes to may places but the journey is far more about the journey than the destination. Mental health, depression, childhood, writing: these are Diski's subjects.

Both journeys begin for Diski when her 18-year-old daughter Chloe decides to search for the maternal grandmother she has never met.

Antarctica is not so much a destination as a symptom in this intense, disturbing memoir of a wickedly unpleasant childhood. Novelist Diski (Monkey's Uncle, 1995 etc.) doesn't like to travel, doesn't like breaks in routine--""indolence has always been my most essential quality""--but an undeniable urge to visit Antarctica swept her along.

3 Reviews Skating to Antarctica. Jenny Diski. Virago, 2005 - Antarctica - 240 pages. 3 Reviews Skating to Antarctica is not an easy read but it is a consistently engaging one. A shrewd observer, Diski explores perceptively how and why we travel, and I enjoyed her quiet contemplation of her fellow tourists, most of whom spent so long recording their experiences of icebergs and penguins through a lens that they never seemed to stop and Antarctica is not so much a destination as a symptom in this intense, disturbing memoir of a wickedly unpleasant childhood. I actually had other recommendations of Antarctica-based travelogues for my reading list, including the books of Sara Wheeler, but as my curiosity had been piqued by the great acclaim lauded on Jenny DIski, and I decided there was only really room for one Antarctica title on my list, I plumped for Skating to Antarctica. Skating To Antarctica goes to may places but the journey is far more about the journey than the destination. Mental health, depression, childhood, writing: these are Diski's subjects. But do not be fooled by the reviews below; Diski is a very conscientious writer that deconstructs autobiography as she writes it.

Lustigt nog  Jenny Diski har skrivit "Skating to Antarctica" (på svenska "På tunn is").
